About Second Gear
The Second Gear Story
Second Gear is a Mac and iOS development shop based out of Indianapolis, IN. Second Gear was founded in 2006 by crew chief and lead developer, Justin Williams. Justin began developing for Mac OS X while still a student at Purdue University contributing and then fully acquiring Check Off. Though Justin is the only full-time employee at this time, he is assisted at times by a capable group of designers, localizers and support wranglers.
At its start in early 2006, Second Gear was focused on developing Web application solutions for a healthy stable of clients using the Ruby on Rails framework. We also introduced our first product, the Web-based bug tracker Porchlight. We also released the most popular Twitter application for the iPhone in 2007, PocketTweets with the help of our friends at The Pixel Implosion.
At the end of 2007, we were feeling a bit worn out on building stuff for others and incredibly burnt out on the Web 2.0 space. Rather than pursue something we weren't that passionate for, we shifted the company's focus to our true passion: the Mac.
The first Second Gear application, Today was released in April of 2008 to much critical and consumer acclaim. Today's release was followed up with Check Off 4 in August 2009. Today 2.0 was released in January of 2010.
